At the January Library Board meeting, the board approved CPL’S Long Range Plan for 2012-2016. Here are the major goals you will see us accomplish this year.

· Survey patrons about their use of eReaders and the library’s OverDrive service
· Add to our eBook collection
· Provide more outlets for patron’s laptop use
· Complete the Children’s Area Renovation project
· Shift of all of our adult materials to better facilitate patron use
· Expand the number of classes in our computer training lab to provide training for downloading digital material
· Implement the State’s 2012 Summer Reading Program
· Celebrate the Library’s 50 year anniversary in October
· Continue to provide quality age level programming and outreach
· Create a new Library webpage

Chili Senior Center Chain Gang Delivers!!

The chain gang delivered homemade hats and mittens for the 11th annual mitten drive at the Chili Public Library for the Lewis Street YMCA Child Care Center. From left are Jean Keller, Connie Hicks, Rose Cumbo, Lesley Eich and Chau Le. The Library is collecting hats, mitten and scarf for infants through age 12 until January 10.
The Chain gang meets Wednesdays at 1 p.m. at the Senior Center and new members are always welcome.

Children's Area Renovation

Coming Soon. The Children's Area will be renovated to include increased shelving, an additional children's computer station, and increased display and reading space by the bay window. Work will occur over the next couple months. Stay tuned!

Children Use the Kids Catalog

You have probably used th Library's Catalog Plus and Classic Catalog but did you know there is a special catalog just for kids? It is called the Kids Catalog. Using the Kids Catalog children find books in a series more easily with a predefined list of popular titles like "Junie B. Jones" and "The Magic School Bus." It uses an interactive title display which magnifies book jackets and provides detailed information about their selections. A category wheel offers dozens of subject areas to choose from ranging from math and reading to baseball, cats, and scary stories. What's New at the Books n' Bites Book Discussion Group

Savannah got a Nook for her 10th birthday and brought it to the Books n' Bites book discussion group yesterday. She's already reading Nancy Drew as well as other stories on her new nook. From our website, kids are able to find eBooks they can borrow and download to their eBook Reader from OverDrive. All they need is their library card!

Yesterday's Storytime Election

New Library Logo

I am more than pleased to introduce the new Chili Public Library logo recently approved at the October Library Board meeting. Much thought went into creating this new logo as we wish it to represent who we are and what this library means to the community. Staff, Library Board members, Friends Board members and patrons were asked for their feedback on a half dozen drafts that were presented to them before the final logo was chosen.
I particularly like this logo for several reasons. It was created by a professional graphic artist so the colors chosen are quite colorful and welcoming. Anyone who has visited our library understands what a welcoming lifelong learning center this library truly is. The logo also states boldly that we are a library serving the Town of Chili. It also notes the library was established to satisfy the public’s need for knowledge. Finally the logo illustrates our connection to the past by the picture of books, as well as our connection to the future by the image of the wireless icon. With the increasing popularity of eBooks, the Chili Public Library is ready with an online eBook collection through OverDrive that patrons can check out.
The logo is easily remembered and I hope you like the new logo and take pleasure in seeing it on our brochures and on our website.

Teen Sleepover at CPL

Annual Friends Meeting at the Chili Public Library

At the annual Friends meeting October 18th, retired teacher and historian Ed Evans spoke on the former CCC and POW Camp in Hamlin. The CCC camp was established in 1935, later served as housing for migrant farm workers, and then was a POW camp in World War II. It was a very interesting and enjoyable program. Thanks goes to staff member Patty Bruno who is responsible for putting together the library's programs for our adult population.

Chili Public Library LEGO Club

Press Release from MCLS - Monroe County Library System is proud to announce the V.I.P pass program, a partnership with the Memorial Art Gallery, the Rochester Museum and Science Center, the Genesee Country Village and Museum, Geva Theatre Center and the George Eastman House, which allows libraries to circulate discount passes for each of these institutions. V.I.P stands for “Very Important Places” marking the relevance of libraries, theatres and museums to the life of the community. Working together, our organizations are able to provide multiple opportunities for education, inspiration and enrichment to the residents of Monroe County.

Library card holders can visit a participating library, choose a pass to a museum or theatre, check out the pass and show it at the admissions desk to receive a discount. The pass is then returned to the library for the next user. Great discounts to great places, just by using your library card! Horizons can be expanded by seeing a play at Geva, or star gazing at the Strasenburgh Planetarium. Lending Libraries During the Civil War

Donna, one of our staff members, recently visited the Civil War Re-enactment held on July 9-10 at Genesee Country Village & Museum. There she took a pictures of Jessica, one of our clerks, and Jenn, our children's librarian who play the part of delegates from the United States Christian Commission. The USCC was an important agency of the Union during the American Civil War. It was designed to offer religious support, but also provided numerous social services and recreation to the soldiers of the U.S. Army.

If you look closely, you can see Jessica ready to lend soldiers books (dated from the 1800's).

After months of work and planning, the Monroe County Library System is happy to introduce CARL X, the new software upgrade to our catalog!

The new upgrade offers our patrons an enhanced version of the ever reliable Classic Catalog, and an entirely new searching option with CatalogPlus.

Catalog Plus is an entirely new, enhanced catalog featuring a more visual, dynamic, and interactive experience. Use Catalog Plus to create a personalized username and password to access your account, search for materials, find recommendations, read and write reviews, and create and save lists. Everything about the interface is designed to make it easier to find what you’re looking for.

There is also a LS2 Mobile Library App now available which allows you to search our catalog and renew materials using an iPod Touch, iPad and Smartphone.

Chili Library Board of Trustees

The Chili Library Board of Trustees meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Library's Barbara M. Ireland Room. This Board is the governing body of the Chili Public Library. The Board recommends the library's operating budget, establishes governing policies, appoints the Library Director, and oversees the long range planning for the library. The Board consists of seven members whose appointments are approved by the Chili Town Board. Appointments are for 5 years.

The Library's Circulation Desk

I usually don’t quote Wikipedia but it accurately reflects the important duties of a Library’s Circulation department’.
“Library circulation or library lending comprises the activities around the lending of library books and other material to users of a lending library. A circulation or lending department is one of the key departments of a library.
The main public service point is the circulation desk or loans desk, usually found near the main entrance of a library. It provides lending services and facilities for return of loaned items. Renewal of materials and payment of fines are also handled at the circulation desk. Circulation staff may provide basic search and reference services, though more in-depth questions are usually referred to reference librarians at the library reference desk.
Functions of the circulation desk staff may include:
• Lending materials to library users
• Checking in materials returned
• Monitoring materials for damage and routing them to the appropriate staff for repair or replacement
• Troubleshooting circulation technology, i.e. library circulation software, scanners, printers, etc.
• Collecting statistics on library use, i.e. patron transactions, material checkouts, etc.”
I have always found our Circulation Desk to be a critical area of the library. That is where a great many of our patron interact with our staff. At the Chili Public Library, our circulation staff often knows our patrons by name and helps welcome our patrons to the library experience.

Nomination Entries for the 2011 RRLC Public Library of the Year Contest

Though we did not win the RRLC Public Library of the Year Contest like last year we received great nomination entries (see below). Thank you to all of our patrons who nominated CPL in 2011.

"Simply put...the Chili Library is the best!! There are many reasons that it is truly a gem in Chili. First and foremost...they know you by name. They ask about things going on in your life and remember things you've talked about in the past. They are all very caring! Next, they are so helpful. Anytime I can't find something, have a computer problem or need extra computer time for my daughter to finish a paper....they are there to be supportive. Lastly, the place is just comfy. There is nothing better than sipping good Leaf& Bean coffee in front of the fireplace while reading the newspaper!! They are also wonderful employers. The Chili Library is important to us because our daughter works there. She was hired at 15 and will be graduating in June. She is going to college locally and is thrilled to keep her job at the library. The staff is wonderful. They all look out for her, are very accommodating to a teen’s ever changing schedule and are genuinely interested in things in her life. They are like a family there and as a parent...I feel great knowing that she is going to work in a safe and caring environment!! I could go on and on about this library but I would surely go over the 300 word allotment. In closing...I would compare The Chili Library to Cheers....it's the place where everybody knows your name!!"

"CPL has the most involved, caring children's room staff imaginable. They are always ready to answer a question, make a recommendation, find a special story and maintain such a warm, nurturing environment that my kids beg to go there. My first grader reads at a 4th grade level and I attribute much if his reading success and love of books to Mrs. Amesbury, Mrs. Lindsey and the rest of the caring, friendly staff. They love kids almost as much as they love books."

I started pre-school this year and thanks to Mrs. A, Mrs. Lindsay and Miss Jill and everybody else in the children's room I am off to a very good start! "I have been a patron of the Chili Public Library every since I moved into Chili 30 years ago. At first I went to its "first" home, but in the last 10 years I have been at the beautiful location at 3333 Chili Ave. As the town as grown so has the library. Why is it so great? Many reasons, but first comes to mind is the Staff!! The Librarians do a fabulous job planning events throughout the year for Adults, Children and Young Adults! The quality of the events is outstanding. The library staff as a whole is professional, helpful, cheerful, and knowledgeable and just a joy to do business with! Quite often the staff is on a first-name-basis with its 'regulars'. The selection of items in the collection is outstanding. Regular displays of items of interest to the public are regularly updated. The services they provide are those that all of Chili looks for -- Books, videos, books on tape or CD, music CD's (a fabulous collection), those pesky tax forms, bus schedules, a reasonably priced used book sale, concerts in the park during the summer, movies on the big screen during the winter, employment assistance in these troubling times, reading programs for babies and toddlers, a comfortable place to read the daily paper and have a cup of coffee, Book Clubs, contests, the list goes on and on. Chili Public Library is the BEST!!!"

Volunteer Luncheon

National Volunteer Week was April 10 - 16, 2011. In celebration of our volunteers, the library staff had a volunteer appreciation luncheon last week. The library's volunteers come in many forms. We have a volunteer that helps mend material, another helps reshelve DVD's, another helps with delivery of materials, we have volunteers who are on the Friends of the Chili Public Library Board, as well as volunteers who are on the Library Board. Their smiles brighten our day! Thank you to all of our volunteers.

CNN) -- Librarians, information specialists, knowledge managers or whatever title a librarian might have -- their skills are in high demand. And, though you might not know it, they are everywhere.
And so in their honor during National Library Week, we enjoy the following tidbits of information.

Famous people who were librarians
FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, Casanova, Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, former first lady Laura Bush and China's Mao Zedong. At one point in their lives, each of them either worked as librarian or in a library.

Librarians are techno-savvy
Librarians don't just use books anymore. Searching through tweets, blogs, podcasts, websites and more to find accurate and authoritative information has become more the rule than the exception.
At a time where anyone can Google just about anything, librarians don't just find information, they find the correct information -- and fast. The American Library Association reports reference librarians in the nation's public and academic libraries answered nearly 5.7 million questions each week in 2010.

Filmmaker's library
Even "Star Wars" creator George Lucas has his own research library on his Skywalker Ranch. Lucas started the library in 1978, and the collection is housed under a large stained-glass dome.

Librarians influence our culture and society
While clearing out old archives at the Palmer Theological Seminary in 2005, librarian Heather Carbo found a working manuscript of one of Beethoven's final compositions.

Librarians track spy info and classified intelligence
When the CIA needs to provide information to the U.S. president, they turn to their librarians. To become one of the U.S. intelligence's community research experts, a librarian must pass medical and psychological exams, polygraph interviews and clear extensive background investigations.

Librarians are heroic
Alia Muhammad Baker, the chief librarian of Basra, Iraq, removed 30,000 books from the city's main library before it was destroyed during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Their numbers are many
In 2009, there were 206,000 librarians, 50,000 library technicians and 96,000 other education, training and library workers

Librarians are behind the scenes in current events
-- Federal government shutdown. Lawmakers go to the Congressional Research Service, a division of the Library of Congress, for information.
-- The royal wedding at Westminster Abbey. The Abbey's Library and Muniment Room has a historic collection of books, manuscripts and archival material.
-- NATO no-fly zone over Libya. NATO's Brussels Headquarters houses a multimedia library with a collection focusing on international relations, security and defense, military questions and world affairs.

Warning to readers about librarians
A character in "The Callahan Touch", one of science fiction writer Spider Robinson's books, said, "Librarians are the secret masters of the universe. They control information. Never piss one off."
Good advice.

CPL Mentioned at an Online Conference

The Chili Public Library was mentioned as a trendy library at the QR Codes and Augmented Reality Online Conference held yesterday. Our teen librarian uses QR Codes as a way to provide our teens with simple way to view booklists and reviews of books on display with a click from their iPhone. Still not sure what a QR Code is? If you have an iPhone come to the library's teen section and give it a try.

Staff Training

Recently as part of staff training the library staff took part in a library tour. Over time materials get moved elsewhere and new services are begun. To better serve our patrons the the circulation staff learned more about the collection, and the reference staff learned more about the check-out desk.

Jazzercise at the CPL

Today I was visited by Elena DiCesare, a senior from Churchville Chili High School. She was researching a paper for her Government class and as part of it interviewed me on my role as director of the Chili Public Library. I was impressed with her understanding when I spoke of the role the library trustees and staff, and of issues those in the library community face. It gave me renewed confidence in the generation that will someday take over the reins in providing public service.

Freedom Calls Center at the Central Library

The Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County unveiled a new Freedom Calls Center on Monday November 9. Freedom Calls provides free videoconferencing calls for local families and friends of military personnel serving at selected camps in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan.

A Freedom Calls Center has been set up on the lower level of Bausch & Lomb Public Library Building, located at 115 South Avenue in downtown Rochester, that is equipped with a 52” flat screen monitor, computer, and a web camera which families and friends can use to actively communicate with their loved ones stationed at: in Iraq at Camp Taji, Camp Baharia, Camp Taqaddum, Al Asad Airbase, and Camp Victory; in Kuwait at Camp Arifjan and Ali Al Saleem Airbase; and in Afghanistan at Bagram Airfield.

Callers must know when their soldier can be available to call, and then will schedule use of the Center with the library’s Program Coordinator at 428-8304. Calls may be made between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm Monday-Friday. Weekend calls may be scheduled as per available satellite time.

This service is provided free of charge by the Freedom Calls Foundation, a non-profit organization working to connect families and friends to soldiers at no cost.

The equipment necessary to operate Freedom Calls at the Central Library has been generously provided by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 20. Chapter President Ken Moore said “Chapter 20 was formed nearly 30 years ago on the founding principle that "Never again shall one generation of veterans abandon another". Today our support of this project is one way that will help us fulfill this commitment to our brother and sister veterans. It is with great pleasure that I can represent our 450 members in providing the funding to the Rochester Public Library.”

Library employees are thankful for Bill Seely who's been volunteering with the Chili Public Library for the past eight years by Jessica Spies, staff writer

Employees at the Chili Public Library know what they’re thankful for this year — volunteer Bill Seely.

Seely, an eight-year volunteer, is devoted to his duty at the library. The 93-year-old comes in rain or shine from half an hour to two hours a day Monday through Friday.

“He’s quite a remarkable gentleman,” said close friend Vangie Morrow.

Libraries in the Monroe County Library system get deliveries from other libraries around the county every day. Residents can get a book from one library and return it to another. And Seely is the one who makes sure that the books get to the Chili Public Library.

He’ll check the books into the computer system and then library employees will put them back in the stacks for the next reader.

Morrow, Chili circulation desk staff supervisor, told Seely eight years ago that one of their employees was cutting back their hours. He asked if there was any way he could help.

At that point, he said he could come in two to three days a week.

“But the first week, he came in for five days and with the exception of if he’s not feeling well, he’s here,” Morrow said.

Oddly enough, Seely’s not a big fan of books, but he does enjoy reading magazines like The New Yorker and Canadian magazine Maclean’s. Before he started volunteering, he would come to the library to take out magazines.

Seely, a history buff and former mechanical engineer at Eastman Kodak Co., isn’t one for the spotlight.

“He likes to do the behind the scenes type of thing,” Morrow said.

Director of the Chili Public Library Jeff Baker said he’s thankful for Seely because of his consistency.

“It’s pretty incredible that he does this. We know Bill’s going to be coming through the doors and it’s always nice to see him,” he said. “With Bill, he’s like clockwork.”

But more importantly, Baker said Seely is a great person to be around. He has an infectious laugh and a great sense of humor, Baker said.

“Whenever he’s working, he asks when he’s going to get his raise. He really enjoys the people who are here,” Baker said.

Morrow said she’s thankful for Seely because he can always be counted on.

“He’s very careful in his work. He’s enjoyable to be around and as he has stated on many occasions that his job at the library does more for him thank for the library. We don’t concur. He does an awful lot for us,” she said.

Stackable Plastic Bricks Aplenty

I had a challenge the other day being the judge of last week's stackable plastic bricks contest. The Ireland Room was filled with great talent and they had only one hour to create their masterpieces. There were three age groups preschool, grades K-2, and grades 3-5 all busy at work. I was impressed by the stackable brick houses, museums, spaceships, etc. that were made. Even though there was one winner in each category, everyone went home with a certificate and a smile on their face.

Bill Seely is a community resident that has been a volunteer at the CPL for at least the past 8 years. His main task is returning books from our delivery service . When Bill first volunteered he said he could come maybe 2 or 3 days a week – however, he usually comes 5 days a week! Bill was born in 1917 and always has a story to tell and always says “this job does more for me that it does for the library.” We thank Bill for his years of service and for all he does for the library.

The votes are in! At the Preschool Storytime today the children were asked to vote for their favorite book between; Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, or Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? After the votes were counted Chicka Chicka Boom Boom won, and every child received an I Voted Today sticker. It is good to see democracy at work.

Teddy Bear Sleepover

Carol O'Connor Statue

Behind the Children's Literary Garden is a wooden statue of a woman reading a book to two children. That statue is a memorial to Carol O'Connor.

Carol was a former councilwoman (2000 - 2003). She also served as Receiver of Taxes from 1974 - 1977 and as Town Clerk from 1978 - 1987. She then served as Town Clerk and Receiver of Taxes from 1988 - 1999. She was a member of the historical society and a Plucky Player, a group of women that performed at many area nursing homes, schools, churches and party houses from early 1970 to present. She passed away on September 25, 2003.

As the season changes it is a good time to visit the literary garden and look upon the statue to reflect.

Point and Click at the QR Codes at the Library

What is a QR Code? According to Wikipedia a QR Code is a matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code), readable by QR scanners, mobile phones with a camera, and smartphones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on white background. The information encoded can be text, URL or other data. QR is the initialism of Quick Response, as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed.

Our teen librarian has placed several QR Codes in the Teen new book area. To read a QR Code you just need to take a picture of it with your smart phone, and it automatically sends you to information that has been linked to the codes. For example we have ready made booklists on different topics. You do need to download an QR Code app for you smartphone to use it. Come to the library with your smartphone and give it a try.

Here I am checking out Books and Nibbles, a book discussion group at the library for children in grades 1-3. The kids discuss books of interest, do simple crafts and activities and enjoy a good snack. No registration is required. Will the Internet kill magazines? Did instant coffee kill coffee? So starts a letter crafted by the magazine industry which is found in magazines such as Discover and Entertainment. It asks the question, does the magazine industry find itself in the similar situation newspapers now finds themselves in? Due to digital media, newspaper circulation is down and some newspapers have closed their doors.

It is interesting to note, the letter states, that magazine readership has actually increased over the past five years. And the typical young adults now read more issues per month than their parents. Rather than being displaced by "instant" media, magazines seem to be an 'ideal' complement.

As a provider of information, it is my belief that print materials and digital media will continue to coexist and complement each other for many years. Two facts illustrate this: Visit a bookstore and see it is overflowing with customers, at the same time understand that Amazon sells more Kindle titles than it sells hardcover books. Libraries provide print materials for its patrons and circulates digital audiobooks and e-books as well. The question facing librarians is when is to buy print and when to buy digital for the library's collection?

Summer Reading Program Statistics

The Summer Reading Program has ended and the results are in.

• Children Summer Reading Program – 782 children signed up for the CPL Summer Reading program. That is the most children that have signed up for the program in Chili. The children read for 261,084 minutes.

• Adult Summer Reading Contest - Though the library came in second to East Irondequoit Public Library in the “Great Reading Race” (final counts: Chili 2,451 ~ East Irondequoit 3,628) all patrons were winners who took part in the in the Summer Reading program.

• Teen Summer Reading Contest - The library’s teens came in first to Gates Public Library in the “Great Reading Race” (final counts: Chili 60 teens participated and read 326 books ~ Gates 74 teens participated read 213 books).

I noticed a recipe in the Chili Public Library Booklovers Cookbook submitted by Friends of the CPL Board Vice-President Sandy Roether. Walnut Crusted Chicken sounded delicious and it was just that. Last night for supper I made the dish and it was quite easy. What made it gourmet-like was the herbal cream cheese in the middle of the roll-up chicken breast and the toasted walnuts topping. I only had regular cream cheese in the refrigerator, but no problem as a search on the Internet gave me instructions on what herbs to add. Sandy recommends the book 'My Antonia' by Willa Cather.

Many Thanks to Deborah Ralston and Five Star Bank in Chili for donating two bikes for the Chili Public Library Summer Reading Program. The bikes were great incentives for children to take part in the summer reading program. In the Baker residence, a Sunday tradition is my making pancakes and eggs for breakfast. I found an excellent recipe in the Friends of the CPL Booklovers Cookbook on page 51. "My Favorite Pancakes" is a recipe submitted by Nancy Schwalm. The pancakes turned out to be quite good. I liked their puffy consistency and they were sweet due to the yogurt that was added. The blueberries my wife and I picked at a local farm the day before was an added bonus to the taste. This recipe is a keeper. The book she recommends is "Favorites from the Livonia Countryside Garden Club".

In the fashion of Julie and Julia, I decided to try out a dish from the Friends of the Chili Public Library Booklovers cookbook. The cookbook is for sale at $10 each. On Saturday, I turned my attention to page 35 of the cookbook and made Stuffed Eggplant Creole submitted by Deb Scorse. What a creative way to make eggplant in that the eggplant is cut in half and then the scooped out pulp is mixed with bacon, mushrooms, onion, green pepper, diced tomatoes, celery, and bread crumbs. Salt and pepper is added to taste. The mix is put back in the eggplant shells and is topped off with butter and cheddar cheese. It is done after baking for 20 minutes. It turned out delicious! I look forward to trying out the other recipes in the ccokbook. Deb recommends the book "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" by Tom Robbins.

The Wolf in the Parlor

I took an audiobook out of the library the other day, The Wolf in the Parlor: The Eternal Connection Between Humans and Dogs by Jon Franklin. It is an enjoyable book reflecting on one of my favorite subjects. In chapter three there was a quote about libraries, particularly university libraries, I want to share.

It must be understood, to further my story, that libraries are holy places. In a world dominated by knowledge they are temples and, as temples should, they strike a chord deep in our hearts. Visitors to libraries, like visitors to great cathedrals, converse (if they dare to converse at all) in hushed voices. Our mothers taught us to behave that way, ostensibly to avoid disturbing the intellectual labors of others. But the subtext was clear. Lowered voices are the universal symbol of awe, respect and no small amount of fear.

Walk into a big university’s library and it is all there, mans relentless and compulsive study of history and politics, sociology and psychology, anthropology and religion, art and philosophy. Such a library contains our accumulated knowledge about how we are and where we come from and what we might be doing here, what we could be doing here, all arranged neatly, thousands upon thousands of titles, carefully coded and cross referenced, interwoven by footnote and appendix, summing up who lifetimes of intellectual labor, the fruits of that labor as gossamer as the motes of dust that hang in the shafts of sunlight emanating from the high windows.

Glenda Melville Retires from the Chili Public Library Board of Trustees

The Chili Public Library Board of Trustees and I would like to express a big thank you to Glenda Melville for her years of service on the CPL Board. Glenda served on the library board since December 2000. During that time she acted in the capacity of library board secretary and most recently as vice-president of the library board. During her ten years of service, she has seen the newly built building go through a steady growth in materials, programs and services. Her calm demeanor and understanding of the needs of the community will be missed. At the Chili Town Board meeting on August 4, she received a plaque of appreciation from the town. The library board of trustees donated $200 to the Friends of the Chili Public Library in her name.

CPL Book Lover's Cookbook

The Friends of the Chili Public Library Book Lover's Cookbook is available for purchase at the library. Each cookbook is a $10 value with close to 200 recipes from readers in Monroe County. Some local celebs recipes are included as well. There are recipes for appetizers, soups, salads, vegetables, side and main dishes, breads, desserts, cookies and candies. There is also a section on pantry basics, herbs & spices, baking breads and desserts, vegetables & fruits, napkin folding, measurement substitutions, equivalency chart, food quantities, quick food fixes, calorie counting, and cooking terms. Readers not only entered their favorite recipe but also included their favorite book.

CPL Pet Show

Put together five dogs, two cats, two guinea pigs, a pigeon, a turtle, and a fish and what do you have? The Chili Public Library Pet Show which was held today at 11am. The children spoke in front of an audience of 65 and described what makes their pet special. Each pet received an award, from most obedient to best swimmer.

The Chess Tournament Is On

The Magic Guy

The Children's Musical Group Meatballs Visits The Library

Kids had a super time last Wednesday when Meatballs, the children's music group came to library. There was plenty of singing and dancing, ending with the kids following our children's librarian in a Conga line around the Ireland Room. Next Wednesday the Magic Guy makes a visit.

Summer Reading For Kids

While the children's librarian is having a program tonight, I am working at the children's reference desk. A young girl just rushed into the room with her father, ran over to the container where we keep the daily entries for the summer reading program and exclaimed,

"Oh my gosh, look at all the tickets! Kids must be doing a lot of reading. Kids must love to read!"

I could not have said it better myself.

Beach Blanket Bingo

Win prizes while doing one of your favorite activities, reading. Book Bingo for adults forms are at the library. For library lovers ages 18 and up. Each Book Bingo form has six reading activities you can check off to complete a full row in any direction: horizontal, diagonal, or vertical. For example, listen to an audio book, read a book about animals, a suspense novel, browse our Local History section, and watch a video or DVD will get you a prize. All entries must be returned to the Reference Desk by August 6. Every participant who returns a completed entry will receive a prize. One Bingo per person.

The Library at Chil-E Fest

CPL's connection to Jeopardy

I was excited to see Autumn Hoag from Somerville, Massachussetts on Jeopardy earlier in the week. Autumn is a reference archivist at Massachusetts State Archives. Before that as part of her library of science degree she had practicum at our library. We knew right then that she was a smart cookie and were impressed with her abilities.
